Steels Gate

Steels Gate Wines is comprised of two estates in the Yarra Valley. The cellar door and restaurant is located on our Melba Block in Dixons Creek.

About the winery
The Steels Gate story centres on winemakers Brad Atkins and Matthew Davis who have been producing wine from their ‘Home Block’ at the very top of Steels Creek in the Yarra Valley since 2010. Brad and Matt have travelled and lived overseas and returned to Australia in 2014 to focus on wine-making full time. They purchased the land over at Dixons Creek which is now the Steels Gate Cellar Door and Restaurant fondly referred to amongst the family as the ‘Melba Block’. Surrounding themselves with great people, they are building a boutique destination in the Yarra Valley that is quickly developing a reputation for great wine, food and service. Brad and Matt don’t rest on their laurels and instead strive to evolve their offerings by forming strategic partnerships and extending their market reach.

History & Geography
Situated in the picturesque hillside setting at Dixons Creek, Steels Gate Cellar Door and Restaurant is located just 60km from the heart of Melbourne. Owners Matt Davis and Brad Atkins purchased their home block in Steels Creek and have been successfully making Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Blanc de Blanc and Rose for over 10 years. After purchasing the Melba Block, Matt and Brad, they have worked tirelessly in the new vineyard and cellar door to bring the vines in particular in line withe their growing practices and standards. The Melba Block is situated in Dixons Creek the vines are typical of those on the valley floor in terms of consistent sunshine, and distribution of rain. While their Home Block is situated at the very top of Steels Creek, it is more than 100 metres higher in elevation and is surrounded by natural bush. The Home Block is on a steep slope which adds to the complexity and minerality of the wine from this block.
