About the winery
The Barboursville Vineyards estate is in Virginia, one of the most important states in the U.S.A. from a naturalistic, cultural and historical point of view. Barboursville Vineyards is the original vinifera winegrowing estate in the Monticello viticultural area of Virginia, and has led in proving the viability of Thomas Jefferson’s dream for the production of wines of European derivation and style in this region. In 1976, in an area that history destined for viticulture, Gianni Zonin realized the dream of Thomas Jefferson by creating a large grape-growing estate on the East Coast. The winery is situated on the broad, rolling plateau and foothills of the Southwest Mountains in Virginia, running parallel with the Blue Ridge to the west on an elevation between 180 and 240 metres above sea level. The Soil is composed of a mix of clay and alluvial calcareous deposits.

When Zonin decided to purchase the Barboursville property in 1976, therem were only three vineyards in the state, all producing wines from hybrid American varietals. Today following the lead of Zonin, more than 200 wineries are operating in Virginia all of whom have abandoned hybrids. They are focusing instead on noble European vines. Today there are 7 AVA’s in Virginia, Monticello being the first. Barboursville Vineyards is the original vinifera winegrowing estate located in the Monticello viticultural area in the rolling Virginia foothills, about 18 miles northeast of Charlottesville. The Estate faces the Blue Ridge Mountains to the West and is flanked by the Southwest Mountains on the East and South.
