History & Geography
Fred and Eleanor McCrea stumbled across the property that would become Stony Hill Vineyard in the early 1940s. The first Stony Hill harvest came in 1952, and the wine was snatched up quickly by family and friends. By 1954, every bottle was sold via a mailing list, with a waiting list growing by the day. Stony Hill wines have stood the test of time and the changing palates of consumers and remain some of the most respected and highly-sought-after California wines today. Eleanor and Fred have since passed on and in 2018, after three generations of McCrea leadership, the family decided it was time to find a new steward to carry on the Stony Hill tradition. Their longtime friends Ted, Laddie, and Chris Hall of Long Meadow Ranch now continue Fred and Eleanor’s original commitment to wines of impeccable quality and longevity and Stony Hill’s dedication to Old World style winemaking.
