L'Aventure Winery

Where Bordeaux meets the Rhone

About the winery
L'Aventure was founded in 1998 by Stephan and Beatrice Asseo. Prior to creating L'Aventure, Stephan and Beatrice lived in Bordeaux, France where they established Domaine de Courteillac and later acquired with Stephan's family Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillon. For over 15 years, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker and gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron. However, Stephan wanted to be more innovative and have more freedom than what the AOC law would allow. In 1996, Stephan and Beatrice took the decision to leave everything they had built in France and start a new adventure. After considering different areas, they fell in love with Paso Robles in California. The spirit of L'Aventure is most evident in Stephan's "Paso Blends", such as Optimus and Estate Cuvee, as well as in our Rhône blend Côte à Côte, where the blending of premium varietals increases the authenticity, complexity, and balance of the wines.

History & Geography
After searching for over a year among the world's great wine fields, ranging from South Africa to Lebanon, Argentina to Napa, Stephan and Beatrice found Paso Robles. The site for the vineyard was selected after an extensive study of the area that matched Stephan's experience as a vigneron. He immediately favored the west side of Paso Robles for its sloping hills and authentic quality terroir. The one hundred twenty seven acre property he chose is comprised of multiple hills of various elevation and complex, soils. He finds the aspects of this terroir to be fundamental in obtaining the high quality fruit necessary to create the wines he has envisioned for L'Aventure. Because of its close proximity to the ocean, the vineyard is characterized by warm clear days with night time temperatures which can drop by approximately 40 to 50 degrees. This dramatic temperature variation increases the time of the grapes maturation cycle providing fruit that creates a more complex and balanced wine.
