Melbury Vale Vineyard

Artisan Melbury Vale Vineyard, Winery and Distillery is set in the beautiful Stirkel Valley, renowned for its green rolling Dorset hills

About the winery
The winery was designed and constructed by owner and Chartered Surveyor Clare and operational for 2013. It is built into the hillside with a number of sustainable design features; including wild flower meadow roof and rain water harvesting. Enquiries for new vineyards to be planted in the area came rolling in, with over 5,000 new vines already planted locally in response to the winery appearing, creating an unplanned but very welcome small co-operative for Dorset vinegrowers. Melbury Vale now also distils its own wine to make liqueurs, brandy and aromatised wines.

History & Geography
Melbury Vale farm was bought in December 2003, by brother and sister, Glynn and Clare, as 28 acres of derelict and dilapidated farmland and buildings, near to Melbury Mill and Cann Mill in the beautiful and historic milling valley along the river Stirkel. Clare and Glynn have restored the land to good management with much determination, hard work and support from friends and family over the years, to make it the varied and thriving rural business that it is today, including 2,000 vines on the south facing hillside. The high altitude of the vineyard, combined with soil of greensands over clay seams at Melbury Vale is not the typical site that one might seek to plant a vineyard, but once established the vines have produced some award winning, niche, artisan wines that are enjoyed by customers.
