Vergelegen

There must be harmony between the old and the new. Vergelegen crafts wines that reflect their ‘sense of place'.

About the winery
Since the beginning, Vergelegen has crafted wines that reflect their ‘sense of place’. A detailed masterplan was drawn up for the development of the vineyards and, after intensive climatic and soil analysis, the first vines were planted in 1989. The winery has always maintained absolute focus on treating the grapes and the terroir they come from with respect. The climate is mild at Vergelegen due to the close proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, and a rich array of 21 different types of soil have been identified including some that are among the most ancient viticultural soils in the world. Vineyard sites range in altitude between 140m and 310m above sea level. The winery is unlike any previously designed in South Africa, a multi-levelled gravity flow winery allows for the gentlest possible handling of the wine. The meticulous combination of all these elements and more, make up the provenance at Vergelegen ensuring distinctive wines of the highest quality.

History & Geography
Vergelegen was founded in 1700 when Willem Adriaan van der Stel, Governor of the Dutch colony, the Cape of Good Hope, was granted land in the fertile valley rising from the banks of what is now the Lourens River up the slopes of the Hottentots Holland mountain range overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Aptly, he named it Vergelegen meaning 'situated far away'. Today, in keeping with founder van Der Stel's original vision, Vergelegen is indeed a model estate of global repute, its gracious blend of the old and the new attracting a stream of local and international visitors.
