Abbazia Monte Oliveto

A Magical Estate at the Picturesque Hill Town of San Gimignano

About the winery
The Abbazia Monte Oliveto estate, surrounded by century-old olive groves and vineyards of Vernaccia vines, lies at the heart of an enchantingly beautiful area dominated by the ancient towers of San Gimignano. Founded by the knight Gualtiero Salvucci, the abbey was built in 1340 by Olivetan Benedictine monks, who were experts in selecting the finest areas for cultivating vines and olive trees. Abbazia Monte Oliveto is a magical place where wines and large oak barrels embody the very best of local tradition. Here modern technology merely preserves the outstanding quality that derives from the sun-drenched indigenous Vernaccia grapes. The estate’s name is derived from a medieval abbey, which lies on top of an orchard hill. It is situated in the heart of the rolling hills of Siena, Tuscany: approximately one mile from the picturesque town of San Gimignano. The property has a total of 35 hectares, 20 of which are dedicated to vineyards.

History & Geography
Abbazia Monte Oliveto was originally an abbey built by the Olivetan monks in 1340. The monks cultivated Tuscany’s most highly prized olive varieties: Frantoio, Moraiolo, and Leccino, as well as the fames Vernaccia di San Gimignano varietal, which proces one of the most renowned white wines in Italy. These wines have been admired throughout history; the Italian poet Dante Alighieri even praised their excellence. Over the centuries, Abbazia Monte Oliveto has remained relatively unchanged. Today, the breathtaking view of San Gimignano’s towers can still be seen from the vineyards. The Zonin family acquired the property in 1981. Since then, they have been committed to preserving this historical landmark for future generations.
