Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Castello Banfi Il Borgo is ideal for enjoying the comfortable tranquillity of the Tuscan countryside.

About the winery
Banfi, a family owned wine producer based in Tuscany, is celebrated worldwide as “Builders of Brunello.” The Mariani family, firmly established as leading importers of fine wine in the US, founded their Castello Banfi vineyard estate in Montalcino in 1978. In so doing they indissolubly linked Banfi to this terroir and its growth. They assembled a contiguous estate of 2,830 hectares, one third of the property is under specialized vine and the balance is shared between olive groves, wheat fields, plum trees, truffle stands, forest and scrub. Just over a year after the founding of Banfi in Montalcino, the Mariani acquired the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone, today known as Banfi Piemonte. Recently Banfi has approached new Tuscan territories among the most renowned in the region, such as Bolgheri, Maremma, Chianti and Chianti Classico. Now the third generation of the Mariani family, with Cristina Mariani-May, is fully at the helm of the family business.

History & Geography
For its strategic position between Siena and the Maremma Tuscan seaside, together with the fertile soils that surround it, the Castello di Poggio alle Mura, now known as Castello Banfi, has been desired and contested over the centuries. The complex as we know it today developed for the most part between the 9th and 13th centuries but its origins are most certainly even more ancient. Quite certainly there was a settlement on this spot in the era of the ancient Etruscans. After many changes, the last transfer of the property came in 1983 when the Castello, in precarious structural condition following damages sustained in the course of World War II, became part of the Banfi vineyard estate. Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the hospitality centre, Castello Banfi Il Borgo, is ideal for enjoying the comfortable tranquility of the Tuscan countryside and helping to intensely discover a more authentic Tuscany.
