History & Geography
The Capannelle story began in 1974 when Raffaele Rossetti bought a 16th century Tuscan villa surrounded by 10.5 hectares of land in Chianti. A small vineyard was planted with local grapes along with two additional hectares of olive trees. Meanwhile, the villa underwent extensive renovation with the addition of a tasting room and cellar. Our first label was released in 1975; a table wine named simply Capannelle that was able to wow the critics and gain market attention, becoming a symbol of quality that has stayed with Capannelle ever since. French oak barrels were introduced in 1977, Chardonnay in 1988 and Capannelle's signature50&50 in 1988, a successful collaboration with Montepulciano winery Avignonesi. In 1997, Capannelle was bought by James B. Sherwood, founder of Orient Express Hotels (now Belmond), with the intention of making Capannelle a world-renowned brand. Today, our boutique wine resort has tripled its terroir and our wines are distributed in 35 countries.
