Rheingau Wine Today: GEORG BREUER estate For more than two centuries Rheingau wines have had an important share in raising the prestige of German wines. More than 500 years ago the Riesling grape variety was first mentioned here and subsequently all efforts were concentrated on this variety. Today more than 80% of all vineyards are planted with Riesling. Terms like Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and ice wine were introduced here. The Rheingau today is part of the spearhead of German viticulture. Founded in 1880, our estate GEORG BREUER started to specialize in dry, well aging Riesling wines with a noticeable acidity in the early 1980s. For us quality originates from our vineyards. Older vines, low yields and sole handpicking are very important to us. By allowing herbs and weeds to cover the vineyard soil we prevent erosion and even accept lower yields. History & Geography
The estate, founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company by Bernhard Scholl and Albert Hillebrand, has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Peter Breuer handed the estate to his son Georg (1910-1982), after whom it is named today. Georg enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Heinrich and Bernhard Breuer expanded the vineyards to 15 hectares in the 80ies and have now reached with the take-over of the monopol Rauenthal Nonnenberg and further purchases a total size of 34 hectares (84 acres) in the best Rüdesheim and Rauenthal sites. Today, the estate is managed by Theresa with the continued assistance from Hermann Schmoranz and cellar master Markus Lunden.
