History & Geography
The estate has a rich farming history dating back to 1771. Then a fruit farm, Warwick only emerged on the forefront of South Africa’s wine scene when Stan and Norma Ratcliffe bought the estate in 1964 and started developing the land with an extensive focus on the classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Almost all the estate’s vineyards are planted on the foothills and mid-slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain with vineyards ranging from 240 to 360 metres above sea level. This elevated position exposes the vineyards to cooling winds during the spring and summer seasons. A variety of slopes, aspects and the prevalence of different clay-rich soil types result in unique pockets of terroir, allowing us to produce wines with complexity and character. Many of the vineyards are found on cooler south and southwestern facing slopes that produce some of the best Cabernet Franc in the Stellenbosch region.
