History & Geography
Established in 1694, Rust en Vrede is rich in history, with a beautiful Cape Dutch style farmstead dating from the late 18th Century. Vines have always been cultivated on the property, but since the 1970s the Engelbrecht family has specialized in full bodied red wines with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The flagship wine - Rust en Vrede Estate - is an unusual blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah and Merlot, which has become our hallmark and has forged a path for Rust en Vrede, and by association, South African wine, in the international wine industry. Nelson Mandela honoured us by selecting our wine to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Oslo in 1993, and our wines have also been selected five times for Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines in the World, to name just a few of our memorable milestones. We are very proud of the Rust en Vrede legacy and hope to uphold the family tradition of excellence for future generations.
