Howard's Folly

We’ve built the first Urban Winery in Portugal! Based in the beautiful and historic town of Estremoz, we converted a heritage building into a winery.

About the winery
We are excited to welcome you to the world of Howard's Folly wines. Based deep in the beautiful Alentejo countryside in Portugal, we make award-winning wines from unique blends of carefully selected local grape varieties. We are proud of the recognition we have achieved from the drinking public and the world's most important critics: ''Just screams pure elegance" - Jancis Robinson "You are unlikely to find a more complete, succulent and layered red wine anywhere in the world for the same cash" - Matthew Jukes Most of all, we are happy to produce wines which our customers love to drink. Howard's Folly is served in some of the best restaurants around the world including several with Michelin Stars. Our passion for wine means that we continually play with our portfolio to express the best of each vintage. Last year we created a fabulous single varietal Touriga Nacional. This year we are producing our first rosé wine and are experimenting with amphora wines.

History & Geography
Since 2002, Howard Bilton and David Baverstock, Portugal’s premier winemaker, have partnered to bring to the market a range of outstanding wines under the Howard’s Folly label. The new winery opened in 2018 – just in time for the vintage - and allows us to have tighter control over the wine making process and to make small batch wines. The winery was expanded to provide a beautiful, bar, restaurant, tasting area and gallery/event space at the beginning of 2020. The location is no accident. Already the gourmet capital of the Alentejo, Estremoz will shortly host a very large and beautiful art museum being built by Joe Berardo which seems sure to attract new visitors to the town. It’s also an amazing place to visit with picturesque cobbled streets, historic buildings and a wonderful market on Saturdays. Our core mission: “Wine. Art. Charity”. The carefully selected art on our labels inspires our mission to give back to the community through the Sovereign Art Foundation.
