Trinity Hill Wines became one of Hawke’s Bays early Gimblett Gravels pioneers in 1997, planting grape vines on a barren plot on the former Ngaruroro River bed. This 18-hectare vineyard known as ‘Gimblett Estate’ is planted in Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as Syrah and Viognier. ‘Gimblett Road vineyard’ was planted in Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot and Syrah, with wines being released to critical acclaim in 1998. In 2000, a further 20-hectare parcel of prime Gimblett Gravels was developed, named “Gimblett Stones” planted in Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot plus areas of Tempranillo, Syrah and Viognier. By 2001 The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association was set up with 34 vignerons to from a “terroir”-defined area on the former Ngaruroro Riverbed, Trinity Hill remains a founding member.
