History & Geography
The story starts when two brothers with itchy feet set off from Germany and found themselves in New Zealand. The three sons of a stonemason were planning to follow the family enterprise, however, in 1981 Theo and Alex Giesen purchased land and planted a vineyard outside Christchurch, at the time it was the world’s southern-most vineyard. Younger brother Marcel took himself off to winemaking school and joined them in New Zealand for their first vintage in 1984. The three Giesen brothers always aspired to create great wines, wines people love to drink. From that first vintage they made Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which was an instant hit. Drawing on their German heritage the brothers recognised that cool-climate winegrowing created wines with flavour. So buying their first Marlborough property in 1993 was a natural step. Since then, the Giesen brothers determination has driven international recognition for Marlborough and Sauvignon Blanc. They now also produce many other varieties.
