Cantine di Marzo

open all year round to people interested in discovering another historical aspect of Campania or simply trying wines with authentic flavor of Irpinia.

About the winery
The historic winery where Greco di Tufo was born. In 1648 Scipione began the construction of his palace , which incorporates the ancient city walls, and the historic cellars below it. The ancient medieval tunnels of the town were then adapted over the centuries to cellars, given the natural predisposition of these humid and dark environments for storing wine, maintaining high humidity and a cool temperature all year round. Rich in this historical heritage and avant-garde winemaking techniques, the Azienda di Marzo has been the protagonist of the Campania wine-making tradition over the centuries.

History & Geography
The legend tells that in 1647 Scipione di Marzo , progenitor of the family, left the birthplace of San Paolo Belsito, near Nola, to escape the plague that raged in Europe, taking refuge in Tufo . Tradition has it that he brought with him the grapes of an ancient vine spread on the Campania coast, called Greco del Vesuvio . Over the centuries, the grapes perfectly adapted to the Tufo hills with their unique subsoil, rich in minerals, especially sulfur , which gives the wine its particular minerality. Scipione di Marzo is therefore commonly considered as the creator of the famous Greco di Tufo .
