About the winery

At HOLDVÖLGY we operate on 27ha in 7 different crus and 22 parcels exclusively in Mád basin, with all the 6 white grape varieties allowed by the Tokaj appellation with sustainable viticulture. We make blends, monovarietal and grand crus dry and sweet wines (like the famous 6 puttonyos Tokaji aszú, szamorodni and late harvest) that express their landscape and are vegan. We are the only Tokaj winery who has continuously made 6 puttonyos aszú in every year since 2006. We are able to do that because keep very high standards in the vinyard and in the winery too. HOLDVÖLGY has been awarded Best Winery Award from the Hungarian Sommelier Association in 2019 and a multitude of international gold awards as well. Recently our 6 puttonyos aszú, CULTURE 2012 has won a platinum medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 in London, with 98 points, and our dry estate selection, VISION 2017 has been awarded a gold medal like its previous vintage.

History & Geography

Our winery is in the heart of the Tokaj wine region in Hungary, just a few miles from Europe’s geometric centre. The Mád basin holds a special position in the world of winegrowing because of its unique soil, macro- and microclimate. Settled as early as the 15th century, Mád is identified in ancient documents as a borough. It was a meeting point for barons, counts, lords, and wine merchants, making it a pivotal location for winegrowing and the wine trade. The history of the winery started with a one-hectare birthday present. Our estate is situated on twenty-two parcels within seven different vineyards in the best areas of the Mád basin. Our cellar is one of the oldest cellar systems in the region, with some sections dating back as far as the 16th century. Our cellar is also one of the longest, measuring 1.8 kilometers. The goal was and still is to achieve the vision of creating an iconic brand by international standards.
