Barta Winery

We strive to preserve as best as possible both the appearance and soils of this exceptional land for future generations.” Károly Barta

About the winery
Barta is a tiny family-owned winery in Hungary’s Tokaj Wine Region, and produces a mere 15,000 bottles of premium dry and sweet whites from 13 hectares in one of Tokaj’s historically first class vineyards (organic vineyard cultivation and winemaking). We highlight the minerality of the land and the character of the grape variety. These wines are so carefully attended. We ferment and mature them in 500-l oak barrels, and then allow the barrel notes to integrate into the structure of the wine. Creating elegant wines is extremely important to us. Grape varieties: Furmint, Hárslevelű, Sárgamuskotály, Kövérszőlő. The winery is based in the 16th-century Rákóczi-Aspremont mansion in Mád, where the cellar and wine house have preserved both function and outward appearance to this day.

History & Geography
At Barta Winery, a leading family-owned artisan Tokaj winery in Mád, we strive to preserve this special land and its soil for future generations. Thus we try to cultivate our historical First Growth vineyard organically. This is true of our winemaking too: we allow spontaneous fermentation and employ the least intervention possible, maintain maximum cleanliness and use organic methods to create our wines. We would like our wines to reflect the unique qualities of the grape varieties and their exceptional terroir: the land, vineyard orientation, weather conditions of the vintage and the characters of those involved in making the wines – to present exclusive and unrepeatable lots. In 2003 we replanted one of the most imposing and steep-est areas of Király-hegy, “King’s Hill”. After nearly three years work, this legendary 10-ha terraced estate was revived. During restoration we managed to preserve the terraces that had evolved over centuries. Vineyard: Öreg Király-dűlő, Kővágó
