History & Geography
Karnail, from the village of Kalala, moved to Canada in 1993 as an Electrical Engineer; however, Karnail found that Canada would not recognize his degree. Therefore, he went back to his roots; organic farming. He started work at Summerhill Pyramid Winery in 1995, and this is where he met Kalala’s winemaker, Tibor (Tibby) Erdelyi, and a winemaking consultant, Alan Marks. After working at Summerhill Pyramid Winery for over 10 years, Karnail officially opened the doors of Kalala Organic Estate Winery in 2008. Karnail believes that organic doesn’t mean just using organic products but it is about balance to keep the land safe for future generations. Kalala’s Chardonnay Icewine was judged number one in 2016 and placed in the top 10 worldwide in 2014 and 2010 at Chardonnay du Monde® competition .In 2019, the B.C. Grape Growers’ Association presented its inaugural Viticulturist of the Year award to Karnail, which makes him the best wine grape grower in BC.
