About the winery
Wine Cellar Villa Melnik is one of the premium family-owned boutique winery estates in Bulgaria. Villa Melnik continues a vine-growing and wine-making tradition with over 200 years of documented history. The estate owns 30ha of vineyards and a modern winery in the country’s wine-capital, the Melnik Region, Struma River Valley, South-west Bulgaria. The winery is open for tours and tastings daily and also hosts many festivals, cultural events, and workshops for wine, food, and local traditions. Visitors can take guided tours of the vineyards and observe all stages of the production process as they walk through the three levels of the winery. Guests can descend into the underground cellars deep into the sandy hill, where the bottles and barrels age under the sounds of music. The tour culminates in the tasting room where winelovers can indulge in Villa Melnik wines paired with local delicacies.

History & Geography
Villa Melnik is situated in the Melnik Region, Struma River Valley, South West Bulgaria. The region benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate. The terroir is characterized by sandy soils, which allow water to seep through, as well as limestone and volcanic deposits from the nearby extinct volcano Kozhuh. We do not treat our vineyards with any pesticides and do not use any damaging practices that may create pollution or in any way harm our grapes or the people who enjoy our wines. Villa Melnik specializes in indigenous grape varieties such as Melnik and Mavrud. In addition to award-winning reds, whites and roses, the winery also produces orange wines and noble sweet wines from late harvested grapes. The winery’s architecture enables a “gravity-flow” production process, which means both energy-efficiency and a minimal-intervention, gentle approach to winemaking.
