Grey Sands Vineyard

A small family owned vineyard in Tasmania's Tamar Valley. Unirrigated, close planted & hand tended & picked, producing concentrated wines.

About the winery
Our vineyard is close planted & unirrigated to ensure maximum concentration in our wines, which are more 'European' in style than typically Tasmanian. Our reds in particular need cellaring prior to consumption...so we do the initial cellaring for you! We release our wines when we feel they are a pleasure to drink & enjoy BUT they all still have considerable cellaring capacity. Our vineyard is situated in the Tamar Valley in northern Tasmania, with a commanding view over the valley. We do our tastings in our large 'collector's garden' and visitors are welcome to BYO picnic to enjoy here. We are only 'open' the FIRST weekend of the months of October to April from noon to 5pm. All other times are by appointment only.

History & Geography
Bob & I lived in the UK for nearly 3 years in the early 1980s & during this time we travelled to the various wine growing regions of Western Europe . In his estimation, Bob regarded the wines coming from the cooler regions as the best wines. He decided to return to the coolest part of Australia (Tasmania) to find land to establish a vineyard. We purchased the land, just grassy paddocks, in November 1987. As we don't irrigate, all cuttings have to spend a year in a 'nursery' plot (which can be watered) to grow roots. In winter 1989, the first rootlings were planted in the vineyard...28 rows...18 different varieties...Bob wanted to see which of the varieties he'd seen growing in cooler parts of Europe could be grown in Tasmania...he was sure that more varieties than 'Pinot Noir & Chardonnay' would flourish. Our first wines were bottled under the Grey Sands label in 1998..a Merlot & a Pinot Gris. We now make 11 different wines, all from grapes grown exclusively on the property.
