About the winery

The winery Winkler-Hermaden lies in southeast Styria in the Vulkanland Steiermark wine region, just a few kilometers away from the borders to Slovenia and Hungary. The farm has been operated by the family Winkler-Hermaden since 1918. Regionality, sustainability and hospitality are the heart of the family enterprise. From the 40 hectares of certified organic vineyards, 28 hectares are located on the Kapfensteiner Kogel and include the Ried Kirchleiten, Ried Schlosskogel, Ried Rosenleiten and Ried Winzerkogel vineyards. Another 12 hectares are located 15 km to the south in the wine village Klöch. The focus of winemaking is on complex, savoury, terroir-driven wines with long maturation periods. Selective hand harvesting, protective grape handling, so little intervention as possible during fermentation and maturation is the strategy. The goal is to deliver the typical character derived from the soil and the respective grape variety into the bottle.

History & Geography

The castle and the wine cellar have a long history that reaches back into the 11th century. In the years from 1996 to 1998 a second cellar, the „Lange keller“ was renovated. This 60-metre long, 350-year-old, groin-vaulted cellar is now where the red wines mature in small oak barrels. The oak for their small oak barrels stems from the family's forest on the Kapfensteiner Kogel.
