History & Geography
The family owned and operated estate was founded in 1955 in Leistadt a small town in the hills north of Bad Dürkheim, Palatinate. Today the two cousins Thomas Hanewald & Stephan Schwerdt have taken over the running of the 27 hectar family business. Thomas & Stephan are members of the „Gerneration Riesling“ which represents the modern face of german winemaking. Their focus is on dry wines, primarily made from Riesling & Pinot Noir that express their vintage and vineyard. The success of the estate is close connected to it´s unique style of wine grown on an limestone reef. While almost all Pinot Noir vines are grown on the limestone slopes arround Leistadt the Riesling portfolio shows two complete different terroir driven worlds of the Pfalz. Beside the cooler, more mineral Riesling style from Leistadt you find a warmer, more juciy & spicy typ grown on sandstone soils in the well known Riesling town Deidesheim & Ruppertsberg 15 km south of Leistadt.
