Wanaka's oldest vineyard on the shores of Lake Wanaka, open for tastings by online appointment

About the winery

Situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka, Central Otago, Rippon is a distinct and unique parcel of land that has been cared for and farmed by the same family for four generations. The primary interest for all that work and live on the farm is to do justice to this remarkable piece of land. Biodynamic farming, no irrigation, vines on their own roots and careful attention to what the vines and soils are telling us help grow wines that speak clearly and accurately of their home; Rippon.

History & Geography

In 1912, Sir Percy Sargood bought a large tract of land the spread from the shores of Lake Wanaka across 34,000 hectares of what is now the Wanaka Township and established Wanaka Station. While vines were not part of his agricultural plan for the land, recently discovered family letters reveal that as early as 1895 he was doing the figures with a view to the possibility of winegrowing in Central Otago. It is no wonder then that his grandson, Rolfe Mills, followed a hunch that was sparked by his time in Portugal in the Second World War, would become one of the pioneers of the modern Central Otago wine industry when, in 1975, he started to plant a series of experimental rows of Vitis vinifera. In 1982, Rolfe and his wife Lois planted the first block of vines with the intent of producing high quality wine. Rippon’s first commercial vintage was released in 1989.
