History & Geography
In 1908 Spyros Markou planted the holy Savatiano, the one and only indigenous variety of Attica in the family estates. In 1920 he buys a large plot of land in downtown Athens, where he houses his 1st wine shop - a wooden shack in which he keeps his barrels and a large yard to provide "parking" services to horse-wagon drivers. In 1928 together with his sons, Vasileios and Georgios they build on the same spot, a proper wine shop and restaurant, which is still operational today on Eschilou Street 12A in the historical center of historic Athens. His "Oinopoleion" (wine-shop) even today still serves Markou Vineyards wines and traditional Greek cooked food. In 1983 his 2 grandchildren Spyridon and Konstantinos Markou founded the first modern winery of the family. A contemporary winemaking production unit, “Markou Vineyards”, according to current standards and technological dictates. In 1998, the private vineyards of the family in the Attican wine country further expanded to the wine-grow
