Black Chalk

Vineyard and Winery in the heart of the Test Valley in Hampshire

About the winery
Black Chalk Wine was started in 2015 by Jacob Leadley and his family. The company was conceived with an aim to produce English wines with a focus on quality above all else, and a brand that would hopefully offer something a little different. A ’smudging’ of the line, if you will. Jacob created the first vintage in 2015 and it included the ‘Classic’ and the ‘Wild Rose’. Both of these English sparkling wines were made using the traditional method, and using the tried and tested grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Black Chalk is a wine proud of its English heritage, with roots firmly planted in the chalk-lands of southern England. In 2019, Black Chalk started the next chapter of our journey by acquiring 30 acres of prime established vineyards set over four different sites in the Test Valley in Hampshire. They also took over a shop and tasting room on site, and built a state-of-the-art winery. The 2020 harvest was the first to be produced in their own winery.

History & Geography
In 2009 Jacob Leadley left a comfortable job in London to retrain as a winemaker. Fast forward 7 years and Jacob Leadley is an award-winning winemaker for the very successful Hattingley Valley. Over dinner with friends and family a couple of years ago, talk turned to the idea of creating small production sparkling wine from locally sourced grapes – Black Chalk was born! Since then, it has become the family’s passion and they are all extremely proud of it. The whole family is very much involved in the business, and continue to push the brand to new and exciting levels.
