History & Geography
In 1894 the lovable eccentric, Robert Strangways Wigley, purchased land in McLaren Vale and established Wirra Wirra. The winery thrived until Wigley’s death in 1926 caused its closure. In 1969 another visionary saw two crumbling walls and had a dream to resurrect Wirra Wirra. Greg Trott spent the next three years counting pennies, hauling rocks and re-building. Greg continued to build and dream until his passing in 2005, yet his legacy lives on. Wirra Wirra is an icon of McLaren Vale famous for the Church Block Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot. The Flagship Range of RSW Shiraz, Angelus Cabernet Sauvignon and Absconder Grenache are acknowledged as regional benchmarks.
